Before you became a responsible adult with passwords and opinions about vacuum cleaners, you probably liked things simply because you liked them. Then life got busy. This challenge is about finding one of those things again.
STEP 1 — GO ARCHAEOLOGICAL
Finish these:
"When I was 10, I loved… When I was 16, I was obsessed with… In my twenties I could lose hours doing… I used to be weirdly good at… Something I stopped doing because life got busy was… Something I secretly still want to try is…"
STEP 2 — BAN THE USEFULNESS QUESTION
You are not allowed to ask:
"Can I make money from this? Am I good at it? Is it productive? Is this age appropriate? Will anybody else understand why I'm doing it?"
We don't care.
STEP 3 — PICK ONE
Choose something from your list that makes you feel even 3% more animated.
Dance. Paint. Climb. Sing. Make something. Play a game. Ride a bike. Read trashy fiction. Learn magic tricks. Go rock pooling. Wear ridiculous clothes. Build Lego.
Whatever.
STEP 4 — GIVE IT ONE HOUR
Not a new identity. Not a commitment. Not “my new hobby.”
One hour. The purpose is curiosity, not achievement.
STEP 5 — NOTICE THE RESULT
Afterwards ask:
"Did time move differently? Did I feel more like myself? Do I want to do it again? Did I enjoy it, or did I only enjoy remembering it?"
All answers are useful.
Sometimes rediscovery means reclaiming something. Sometimes it means discovering that Past‑You had terrible taste. Either way, you've learned something.
BONUS ROUND Ask someone who knew you years ago: “What did I used to get ridiculously excited about?” Their answer might surprise you.
